This great early fancy face Spoon W#3 wood club with white/red

as dramatically
different from

Burke Golf
Company was the offshoot of another Ohio golf
manufacturer,
its
founder, William Burke, had managed MacGregor's
club-making for
nearly 15 years before branching out on his own in
1910.
Because by the late 1920s and early 1930s, they were mass-producing,
and it is
easy to overlook the quality and innovation they produced.
The fact that Jock Hutchison used their clubs, and Harry Vardon
later
gave them his endorsement, is testimony to this. It was their
deeply
grooved mashie niblick which Hutchison used to win the 1921
Open,
the first "American" to win it (although he was born and
brought up
in St Andrews) and, when the ban on such clubs came
into effect in
July of that year, Jock presented the club to the
R&A.
One notices too, even in the late clubs, the quality of hickory
in the
shafts. The supply of hickory was running low and many
British clubs
of the period are shafted with visibly inferior wood. C
learly the
Americans were keeping the best for themselves.
