    Description

ATLANTIC CITY "HOTEL SHELBURNE" MATCHBOOK. Pre-Owned  If you've been into Matchbook Collecting for awhile, you probably have seen the extra large "HOTEL SHELBURNE" Matchbook. In fact, I sold one a while back. It had a very colorful Red & Blue inked drawing of the building. There was also a smaller version of a regular sized Matchbook, advertising the Hotel and this is it. Not as colorful, but the detail in the drawing is there. Atlantic City, New Jersey has been the nation's playground on the east coast for many years, but probably more so from the 1920s - 1950s. The Hotel Shelburne was a prime place for tourists, vacationeers, and earlier for those seeking health benefits from the sun and salt water. The original Shelburne, a wood structure, was built back in the 1880s. Sections of the Hotel were replaced in 1922 and 1926. The Hotel advertised on the various Matchbooks was the new Hotel from 1926. As I said earlier the Hotel was considered as a health resort, in fact Atlantic City was considered as a place to go for regenerative effects of sun and salt water. The Shelburne supplied both Hot & Cold salt water as well as fresh water in their rooms. With the years arcades, amusements, food stalls and restaurants were built along the Boardwalk and out on the Steel Pier jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. The Shelburne was renovated in 1950 and a Ballroom for major shows was built in 1953. The 1964 Democratic Convention was held there, but by the 1970s the Hotel was on the decline and after an idea to renovate it was scraped, the Hotel was demolished in 1981.
